The Spanish fashion industry have decided to ban exceptionally skinny models from it’s forthcoming fashion week. This is good news because for too long we have had unhealthy looking, scrawny girls hailed as the ideal of how women should look. Let’s hope it is the start of a major change of attitude in the fashion and beauty industry as a whole.
Not surprisingly, the news wasn’t welcomed in all quarters. Some critics say that seeing ‘slender’ models could encourage teenage girls to lose weight and live a more healthy lifestyle. Others complain that it is unfair to discriminate against the naturally slim. The first argument is just plain stupid. The models who parade up and down catwalks nowadays are not healthy role models for teenagers. They are, or at least appear to be, bordering on starvation; they are not slim, they are emaciated. The second argument is valid. No one should be discriminated against because they are naturally slim, but as I have just said, we are not talking about naturally slim people.
In the 1980s a girl who wished to become a catwalk model needed to be at least 5’7″ and a (UK) size 10 – 12. These proportions are not that unusual for many teenage girls;(at least) 4 – 6 dress sizes too big. I don’t know about you, but if I had a daughter who was 5’9″+ and a size 6, I would be worried. I certainly wouldn’t be thinking how wonderfully healthy she looked!
OK, getting off my soapbox . . .
Before I go I thought you might be interested to know that November 4th is Come Off It day – the idea is we all make an effort to reduce our use of carbon based fuels. Visit the site to discover ways you can do this your self.
And September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate day. Ahoy me hearties, git practsin now, or it’s the plank for yee

It’s about time they stopped touting those ugly half staved things as “pritty”. When was the last time you overheard a man wanting skinny.
I’ve never heard a bloke yet feel attracted to a “bony chick”. But I see some big smiles on chaps with “large” (normal) women. Three guesses why.
Yes, that is very true Matt. I’ve never met any men who preferred skinny girls.
I know a guy who’s really into skinny chicks, and yet he’s quite a big fella and so is his wife. Umm, clearly something’s not right in this picture!?
Other than that, I think most men like a bit of meat on their women, no?
wooooohooo fat is back!!! I knew if I put off dieting long enough it would be the in thing!
lol
Sanity prevails in Spain! Let’s hope it spreads and we see no more of those vacuous-looking chicks whose knees are wider than their thighs. *shudders*
Don’t get me started on models!
We get quite a few at the motor races, from promotion girls to visiting super models.
The fashion models are really quite gross in real life, like emaciated gazelles.
*(asterisk) LOL yes, there is definitely something not quite right about that picture. Although, maybe it’s a case of love being blind – perhaps in his eyes she is skinny.
Nixxie – yes, it won’t be long before skinny girls are asking how you stay so curvy.
Steg – I said the same thing over at Nixxie’s. I was watching the news and some woman from the fashion industry was going on about it being unfair to pick on ‘naturally slim girls’ but in the background they were showing footage of catwalk models and all I could think was ‘surely no ones knees are naturally the widest part of their legs’
Beki – aargh, promotions girls (aka pit-lane bags) I used to go out with a chap who raced bikes and I know just what you mean. Have you noticed how many of them have really bad skin? I know that sounds bitchy but it’s true – I’m sure it’s because they don’t eat properly.
