Ouch!

Just a quick post to let you know I have been quiet because I have broken my finger and it's hard to type, or use the mouse. I'm limited to doing one handed things, so writing any kind of post is not really practical.

Thanks to the people who emailed asking where I was :-)

CP - I read your comment, I'll be happy to do that for you. Drop me an email to let me know what kind of colours, images you would like.

Questions from Pete and a Pleasant Little Ditty

Pete has posted this questionaire on his blog, and if it is a success he will make a habit of it - so go on, have a go! You can read my answers below, and below them is a nice little tune for your listening pleasure, entitled Alice, What's the Matter, it is performed by Terrorvision whom I like because they are local (from Mexborough) and that particular song reminds me of happy nights spent in LTs (which closed and kind of became The Tunnel) in Scarborough in the mid-90s, and it ties in with question 15.

Update: Actually, you can't see/hear the tune below because Blogger keeps telling me it isn't a valid tag (it's not xhtml and when I make it so it reverts back to html) anyhow, you will find it here just open in a new window and listen while you read :-)

1... what is your favourite bird?
I've always liked swans, sparrows too, they are cute.

2...how many pairs of shoes do you have?
No idea. It's a lot though, I would say at least 30

3...what did you have for dinner?
Well, I'm filling this in on Sunday when I had beef etc, no idea what I will have today.

4...could you ever eat snails?
NO!

5...what was the last thing you had in your mouth?
A glass of cranberry juice

6...what is your best feature?
Probably my hair, I have good hair

7...what is your worst feature?
I've never liked my elbows

8...who is your best friend?
Tracy, we have been friends since we were 8

9...who was your childhood nemesis?
The boy from over the road whom I won't name, but he was an idiot

10...having fun?
yes thank you

11...where in the world would you like to go to tomorrow?
Norway

12...when was the last time you lied?

13...why?
Because it's not kind to tell someone that their new trousers are hideous

14...how does bob marley like his donuts?
Sorry, I have got to do it - with jam in ;-)

15...tell us a secret about yourself.
When no else is in the house, I put music on and dance around the lounge

Potential Past Bloggers

Sorry, but I'm going in for a bit of blantant self promotion - over at my other blog, I have just posted a short piece about people from the past who would have been bloggers, and people who should have been. I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas, so if you have a moment to spare, please pop by and leave a comment.

And that's it, have a nice Saturday :-)

Just Saw This . . .

Pete has posted The Good Wife Guide, and all I can say is, if Mr Blogs thinks he is getting that kind of treatment he can think again.

I am intrigued by the line that says 'Be a little gay and a little more interesting'. Pardon?

Something Old and Something New

I did a pretty remarkable thing yesterday, well, at least I think it was, you, Dear Reader may find it extraordinarily dull. I upgraded WordPress, actually that was quite easy, you just upload the files and open up the upgrade page. No, the remarkable thing was that I backed up the database beforehand! Databases scare me, they are mysterious and techy and I don't understand how they work, so usually I avoid having anything to do with them. But, I needed to do the back-up in order to upgrade and so I did and it worked. I didn't break anything.

Also yesterday, I spent a couple of hours rummaging around on ancestry.co.uk delving into my family history. This is actually more interesting than you might think, a bit like your own personal detective story, and the more you learn, the more there is to research. You find out about one relative, but then you want to know who were their siblings/parents/spouse? What did they do for a living? Occasionally, you find the odd mystery, for example yesterday I discovered a reference to my great grandmother on the 1901 census, she was 4 years old at the time. The census listed her father's date and place of birth, but the only the town or village name was given, no mention was made of a county or even a country, so I went off to look at the map to see where this place was, only to discover it doesn't seem to exist. I started in Wales because that is where they were from but ended up scouring England, Ireland and Scotland too with no luck. He was born in 1873 and I'm guessing that for some reason this place doesn't exist anymore, so I'll have to take a look at one of the old map sites to see if it turns up there.

Anyhow, as I was saying, this may all sound rather nerdy, but it's fascinating stuff really. If you have ever thought of having a go then do. Try the site linked above, you can use a lot of the features for free, but it is worth paying for the extra stuff. Other good places are:

Genuki, it's quite a busy site, but full of useful links and info;
1837Online, you have to pay to see records, but if you don't want to use/don't have a credit card you can buy vouchers in most main librarys;
UKBMD, this contains links to a load of regional sites where you can search for birth, death and marriage records, some of the archives are incomplete so if you can't find what you are looking for keep checking back;
Rootschat, a forum full of info and helpful folk who often share resources and ideas that you don't see in other places.

Happy Cats, Puffy Jackets, Beki's New Blog and a Questionaire

Good news from the world of feline diplomacy: Stiltzkin and Diego now seem to be getting along very well. It is strange to see them together because all of a sudden Stiltz seems really huge - he is actually quite a small cat (one of those sturdy short legged types) but compared to the kitten he looks enormous.

Is it me or was it quite warm today? I'm asking because I thought it was, and went into town wearing an off the shoulder top. However, upon my arrival I discovered the place was full of women clad in big jackets of the puffy sort that ski-ers favour. I did notice that a few of them looked quite red in the face, so I'm guessing they were over-dressed, in which case why on earth wear such a thick garment? Is wearing far more clothes than you actually need a fashion thing or are these skinny girls trying to make themselves look bigger now that scrawny is no longer the thing?

If you have a moment pop over and visit Beki's new blog, Travel's With Jean It's all about, well you'll find out when you get there, but it's a lovely idea and in a good cause because she is raising money for the Tommy's Baby Campaign which was set up to fund research into the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and prematurity, it's a campaign I support because Number Four Son was born prematurely, and I think that it's wonderful that Beki has chosen to help them out.

I borrowed this from Steg, who got it from someone who . . . well you get the picture.

The Patter of Tiny Feet (and book/film club news)

Really tiny feet. There is a new member of the Blogs household - Diego* a tiny, eight week old tabby kitten. He is incredibly cute, but I suppose kittens usually are. We were a bit worried about how Stiltzkin (our resident cat) would react, but he took to the little guy very well. Diego on the other hand was clearly terrified of his (comparatively) enormous housemate and decided the best course of action was to make himself big and hiss a lot. Stiltz seemed to understand that he didn't mean it personally, and didn't react, but I get the impression he wonders why such an angry dwarf has come to live in his house. The dogs are a pair of daft, soppy things and immediately tried to kiss him and hug him and love him and be his bestest friends forever and ever. Oddly, he didn't mind that LOL

I have made a decision about the first book and film choices for the book and film club (it wouldn't be for a rubgy team would it) and you will find them here. If you want to take part, but still haven't signed up, I still have a couple of Vox invitations left - signing up there will allow you to post directly to the main page. If you would prefer to post your review on your own blog, leave a comment here to let me know, then email me the url of your post so that I can add it to the main blog - that way all the other members will be able to pop by and have a read.

And that's it :-)

*For any England fans out there, I didn't name him, that was the work of Number One Son, but the name is apt because this Diego is small and plump just like his namesake. I don't know if he cheats at football though.

Ask a Stupid Question

Number Two Son is applying for a weekend job at the local branch of a chain of clothing shops. One of the questions on the application form was that old chestnut: Please explain why you have an interest in working for this company? Why on earth do they bother to ask this, especially when the applicant is a student looking for weekend work!

I told him to say that he had an interest in fashion and retail and enjoyed working with the public. Yes, it's a big fat lie, but saying 'I'm only after the money' wasn't going to get him very far.

No to skinny models and coal! Yes to pirates!

The Spanish fashion industry have decided to ban exceptionally skinny models from it's forthcoming fashion week. This is good news because for too long we have had unhealthy looking, scrawny girls hailed as the ideal of how women should look. Let's hope it is the start of a major change of attitude in the fashion and beauty industry as a whole.

Not surprisingly, the news wasn't welcomed in all quarters. Some critics say that seeing 'slender' models could encourage teenage girls to lose weight and live a more healthy lifestyle. Others complain that it is unfair to discriminate against the naturally slim. The first argument is just plain stupid. The models who parade up and down catwalks nowadays are not healthy role models for teenagers. They are, or at least appear to be, bordering on starvation; they are not slim, they are emaciated. The second argument is valid. No one should be discriminated against because they are naturally slim, but as I have just said, we are not talking about naturally slim people.

In the 1980s a girl who wished to become a catwalk model needed to be at least 5'7" and a (UK) size 10 - 12. These proportions are not that unusual for many teenage girls;(at least) 4 - 6 dress sizes too big. I don't know about you, but if I had a daughter who was 5'9"+ and a size 6, I would be worried. I certainly wouldn't be thinking how wonderfully healthy she looked!

OK, getting off my soapbox . . .

Before I go I thought you might be interested to know that November 4th is Come Off It day - the idea is we all make an effort to reduce our use of carbon based fuels. Visit the site to discover ways you can do this your self.

And September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate day. Ahoy me hearties, git practsin now, or it's the plank for yee ;-)

News About Stuff

A number of readers have expressed an interest in the book and film club I mentioned last week, and I think there should now be enough people to make a start. I'll think of suitable titles for the first month - it might take a day or two to come up with something that will appeal to everyone - and when I do I'll let you know what they are by posting a message here, I'll add a reminder on this blog too just in case anyone misses that one.

If you would like to join in, but haven't said anything yet, don't be shy, you will be very welcome, the more the merrier and so on. So, leave a comment or drop me an email (the address is in the sidebar) and I will send you an invitation.

One of my neighbours is having some work done to their house. I'm trying to figure out exactly what is being done, because from here it sounds like someone is systematically destroying the place. Every few minutes I hear shattering and smashing noises and I'm beginning to wonder if there is some new interior design trend called the derelict look. It involves a rather camp man ripping the guts out of your home, leaving you with a couple of packing cases to sit on, then telling you it all works really, really well.

ps: A few days ago I posted about the dangers of drunken wasps - for everyone who thought I was suffering from delusions here is proof.

Name One Book Meme

Yesterday's post was such a sad one, plus yesterday was a pretty crappy day for me*, so today I'm going to post about more uplifting and inspirational matters. Diddums is tagging everyone who visits for this book meme, so I thought I would give it a whirl. I love books, they are definitely one of mankind's better inventions.

1. One book that changed your life.
HTML for Dummies - it taught me all sorts of things I had previously believed I could never possibly do. That's quite a boring answer isn't it? I expect one is supposed to name an inspirational work of fiction. Hmm, in that case Macbeth, because it taught me that Shakespeare was actually quite interesting.

2. One book you've read more than once.
Ooh, there have been many, I tend to re-read books. I'll say Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. For anyone who hasn't read it, it is a humorous reworking of the Omen and well worth a look, trust me you'll love it.

3. One book you'd want on a desert island.
Now that's a tricky one. Should I choose an old favourite or take a chance with something new? I'll go for a collection of short stories by H.E. Bates to remind me of home.

4. One book that made you laugh.
That's another difficult one, I read a lot of comedy, umm . . . I'll say Reaper Man by Terry Pratchett, I find the character of Death highly amusing, yet strangely poignant.

5. One book that made you cry.
Animal Farm, I wept bucket loads when Boxer went to the glue factory.

6. One book you wish you had written.
Weaveworld by Clive Barker, I just love the idea of a whole world within a carpet.

7. One book you wish had never been written.
I don't really know, theoretically all books have value even if I don't like them. Oh, I know, The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles. I studied it for A'Level and hated every last page of it, and it's multiple endings. It is god awful rubbish, and if it had never been written I wouldn't have been subjected to the horrors of reading it.

8. One book you are currently reading.
Aftermath by LeVar Burton - who was in Star Trek apparently - it's a futuristic sci-fi novel, not really my thing, I started reading it because I was bored, and I'm only one chapter in, so I can't really comment on it. Mind you, the fact I am only one chapter in isn't a good sign, usually when I get my teeth into a book I devour numerous chapters in one sitting, and a small paperback will only last an evening.

9 One book you have been meaning to read.
The Silmarillion by Tolkien. I have read The Hobbit and LOTR, but not that.

I won't tag anyone in particular, I felt a bit mean when I did that before. So, if you want to have a go . . .

* I had to deal with a legal situation concerning my ex-husband which I was hoping to resolve, but I found out it is going to drag on for some time. I won't bore you with the details, but the whole thing is making me feel rather down.

For Joe Riverso

Joe Riverso was 34, a broker for Cantor Fitzgerald, a barman at night and also coach of a school football team, but more than that he was the father of a little girl whom he clearly adored. In what little spare time he had, he enjoyed sports and was a keen golfer. Those are the facts, but how to pay tribute to Joe, when I was never fortunate enough to meet him?

Eventually I realised I didn't need to (pay tribute to him myself) because Joe Riverso made such an impression on the people he met throughout the course of his life that there are numerous tributes to him from people who knew and cared for him. So, instead of writing something that is impersonal, I would like to share some of those comments with you.

"When we speak of someone who has passed on as a "great guy", it is usually clouded by the nostalgia of familial or parochial relationships (everybody thinks their kids are the cutest); as someone who merely passed for the briefest moment through Joe's Life, I can say that he touched me and truly is "great guy"."
Albert Wittman, Joe's former coach

"I knew him as Coach Riverso, not only did he help me become a better football player, but more importantly a better man."
Michael Dwyer, coached by Joe

"I will always remember Joe with a smile."
Karyn, a friend

I think the final quote says a lot. We all hope to be remembered when we are gone, but to be remembered with a smile is a truly wonderful indication of the impact we had on the people around us.

If you would like to know more about Joe and his life, or find out about the memorial fund his family and friends have set up to remember him please visit this site.

Book and Film Club

OK, so you didn't exactly bite my hand off for Vox invitations, but this might interest you more. I have been trying to think of a way to use the blog I have there, initially I planned to use it to post random stuff, but the stuff I post here is pretty random and there is a limit to the amount of randomness one person can come up with. So, what about a book and film club?

I thought it could work like this: we would pick a book and film each month which all members would read/watch and then we could review and discuss them afterwards. Pretty self-explanatory really. To make it fair, the choosers could rotate, so that each member would get a chance to decide what we read or watch. And if someone is only interested in one or the other (books or films) that would be ok.

I have wanted to get involved with something like this for ages, in fact I don't know why I didn't think of it before. If you would like to join in (go on, you know you want to) drop me a line kateDOTblogsATgmailDOTcom (change the DOTS and AT to the real thing) and I will send you an invitation.

On Autumn, Full Moons, Angry Wasps and Strange Search Terms

It seems that Autumn has well and truly arrived, I noticed the weather forecast last night was predicting frost for some areas. We didn't get any here, but it was distinctly chilly. There was a lovely, big Harvest moon though, which looked wonderful and threw out loads of light. BTW, did you know that full moons at other times of year have names too. They usually come from some kind of event which occurs at the same time. So, the Harvest moon is so called because it appears at harvest time. The names do vary depending on the location of the people who used them, but this page offers a good list. A Blue moon happens when there are two full moons in one month, the second being the blue one.

One of the downsides of Autumn is the appearance of aggressive wasps. I know that even at the best of times they do seem to enjoy a fight, but at this time of year they turn into raging psychopaths. Someone once told me this is because they eat fruit which has been sitting under trees for some time and has begun to ferment. So, the wasps are in effect drunk. And what angry drunks they are, a bit like the Millwall fans of the insect world. Somehow, I couldn't imagine bees behaving in the same way. I think they would be mellow drunks who would sit in a corner and hum to themselves.

From time to time I post about the more unusual search terms which have led people to this blog. Yesterday, I noticed what is possibly the strangest of all time. Someone arrived here after asking Google 'how can I tell if my husband is gay?' Hmm. This is puzzling because I can't honestly recall ever posting about such a thing, so I'm guessing that whoever it was went away with their question unanswered. Wishing to provide a certain level of service to my readers, I'll try to help. If you are that person, my suggestion is this: you rent out the films Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn. If you find that your husband is more interested in Antonio Banderas and George Clooney than Salma Hayek, you have an answer to your question. Hope that helps.

One More Thing

Do read this story - it's one of the most heart-warming things I have read for a long time. If haven't got tears in your eyes by the end then you must be as tough as old boots.

I Come Bearing Gifts

I have signed up with Vox, its a new blogging/community thingy, you can see my page here. I'm not going to use it as an alternative to this blog, probably just a place to post random stuff. Anyhow, it is invitation only, but I have some, so if you would like to have a look, send me a quick email and I will get one to you.

Stuff

The Bloglets have all gone back to school. This school holiday seems to have lasted for weeks. Well, really it has, but usually it seems to fly by. I think the difference is that in the past we would go out for days, go on walks and so on. However, they have all reached the age when they don't want to hang out with their mother. I suppose I can't blame them for that, I remember feeling the same - in fact on one occasion I hid from mine when I saw her in town - even so, it does make the whole summer holiday thing seem a bit of a let down. It was nice to go away somewhere and actually spend some time together - ha ha they couldn't get away from me then.

Other Stuff

I found this site a while ago, and I think it's really cool, it features a series of photographs, some of which are animated, showing four seasons worth of Streatham Cemetary - really it's more interesting than it sounds. Strangely relaxing in fact.

And if while you are visiting the above, you happen to notice any lurking zombies, this site explains all you need to know to protect yourself from a zombie apocalypse. Personally, I'm not sure why there is so much fuss about zombies, after all, they walk really, really slowly (with the exception of the 28 Days Later variety, who weren't actually zombies) so if you want to escape from some you can just take a brisk stroll and outpace them.

US Labor Day meme

Jack tagged me for this meme, so I thought I would have a go, even though I'm guessing that Labor Day is over by now.

1. Are you craving anything and if so, what?
I could do with a nice cup of tea, hmm, and a piece of cake.

2. What is the weather outside, and do you wish it would change?
It's cloudy but warm, and there is a light breeze. It would nice if it was a little sunnier because it will soon be winter and I hate the long, cold, grey, wintry days.

3. What two web sites do you think you will go to next after you are finished here?
None, I am about to head off into town to do some shopping. I will probably visit Bloglines when I get back and have a read of some posts there. I will possibly visit the BBC news site too, I pop in there on most days.

4. Do you wish you were somewhere else and if so, where?
No, not really, I'm quite happy here.

5. Do you wish you were someone else, and if so, who?
I have never wished to be someone else, on the whole being me is good.

And now a blog quiz

Ha ha, you didn't really think I was going to post and not give you yet another blog quiz result did you? I found this quiz by following a link from A Blog About Nowt (love that title) So, this is my result, I wasn't surprised to discover I took after my namesake. Pop over and see which Classic Dame you are - if you are a bloke there is a version for leading men.
Katharine Hepburn

You scored 23% grit, 38% wit, 38% flair, and 19% class!

You are the fabulously quirky and independent woman of character. You go your own way, follow your own drummer, take your own lead. You stand head and shoulders next to your partner, but you are perfectly willing and able to stand alone. Others might be more classically beautiful or conventionally woman-like, but you possess a more fundamental common sense and off-kilter charm, making interesting men fall at your feet. You can pick them up or leave them there as you see fit. You share the screen with the likes of Spencer Tracy and Cary Grant, thinking men who like strong women.

Find out what kind of classic leading man you'd make by taking the
Classic Leading Man Test.

What Katy Did . . .

As promised here is a little about my holiday. I didn't do anything terrifically exciting, and Steg will be pleased to know that due to sharing a tent with a dog I didn't do anything i couldn't blog about LOL We went to the Peak District, which is incredibly beautiful, well worth a visit if you haven't been. It's not the most thrilling place in the world, so probably not ideal for anyone who likes clubbing and similar frivolities. Oh, and they have weather there, well they have it everywhere, but Peak District weather is extremely varied - it often managed to do several things at once.

We spent our time walking, visiting pretty little villages and churches (Sons Numbers Four and Five loved that, not LOL) and partaking of ale in country pubs - I liked that bit (hic) Rather than everyone cramming into one tent, we took two, and let the Bloglets share one, while Mr Blogs and I had the other. They genuinely did like that, and managed to get theirs set up before we had done ours. Mind you, they did have a hammer, we had to use a tin which wasn't ideal.

And that's pretty much it, it was a nice, quiet, relaxing time, and I really enjoyed it. If you want to learn more about the area we visited, try here, here or here.

I'm Back

I have returned from my hols, it's nice to be back. Glad to see you left the place tidy and didn't play with the gas fire (tee hee)

I'll post more tomorrow, but I'm off to catch up on some email and stuff now.
